Pharmaceutical plant
Managing the works on a demanding industrial site

On the construction of a pharmaceutical plant, Miles Group assigned Ali, a site manager specialised in HVAC / utilities: managing the contractors, monitoring schedule and costs, and preparing the acceptance of the works.
The project
The client, a pharmaceutical group, is expanding its production capacity in France to meet fast-growing demand.

What is at stake on a pharmaceutical site
Building a pharmaceutical plant is unlike any other industrial project:
- very high quality requirements: cleanrooms, fluid networks and air handling must meet strict levels of cleanliness and control, because they determine the quality of the medicines produced;
- high technical density: building, process, utilities, electrical and automation systems interlock in tight spaces;
- schedules that must be met: every month of delay pushes back new production capacity;
- many contractors: civil works, technical packages and equipment suppliers to coordinate at all times;
- rigorous documentation: drawings, approvals, minutes and acceptance files must be complete and traceable.
What Ali did
Ali works as site manager, specialised in HVAC / utilities. He manages the HVAC and cleanroom works: heating, ventilation, air conditioning and cleanrooms, in a pharmaceutical industrial environment. He handles technical coordination and contractor monitoring, from shop drawings to pre-acceptance checks.
Schedule and costs
- monitoring the works schedule and the associated costs;
- reporting progress and performance indicators to the client.
Procurement
- preparing tenders for equipment and subcontracting, and making recommendations to the client, together with its procurement department.
Contractor management
- managing the contractors carrying out the works;
- taking part in the review and approval of the contractors' shop drawings;
- monitoring progress and chairing technical coordination meetings.
Through to acceptance
- managing the pre-acceptance checks of the works.
What this project shows
On a pharmaceutical site, HVAC installations and utilities require precise coordination with the cleanrooms and the other technical packages. Ali's speciality combines this knowledge of the installations with monitoring of schedule, costs and quality of workmanship. He links the contractors, procurement and project management, through to acceptance.
